Essential Oils: Sandalwood and Cedarwood Benefits

CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL SUNEETA COSMETICS SUNEETA LONDON

To celebrate
the launch of our brand new facial oil with earthy, fragrant Sandalwood and Cedarwood essential oils, we’d like to take a minute to explore some of the benefits of these two powerful, spiritual wood oils from the ancient Sandalwood and Cedarwood trees.

Cedarwood and Sandalwood together offer a wonderfully potent array of benefits to the skin, which we will explore below.

Sandalwood is said to be the most sought after essential oil in the world!

Both oils have numerous benefits for the mind and body, but we’ll just focus on the benefit to facial skin for now, or we could be here all day!

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Aroma: Sweet, woody, musky, calming.

Sandalwood essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of wood from matured Sandalwood trees that are over 80 years old. The older the tree, the stronger the aroma. Sandalwood’s fragrance provides mental clarity, which is why it is often used in meditation, prayer and other spiritual ceremonies.

  • Anti-inflammatory

There are two active ingredients in sandalwood oil - α-santalol and β-santalol - which have impressive anti-inflammatory action, matching the efficacy of ibuprofen and other medicines and without the side-effects! Sandalwood makes an extremely effective treatment for sunburn, psoriasis, acne and other inflammations of the skin.

  • Antiseptic

Sandalwood oil is antibacterial and stops the spread of infection. This makes it great for healing troubled skin and preventing bacterial growth. With the ever-rising pollution levels in the air, this is particularly beneficial as it helps fight the toxins that collect on the skin’s surface; reducing blemishes and discolouration.

  • Scar-reducing

Sandalwood essential oil is very effective in healing and fading scar tissue, acne scars, blemishes and dark marks. This is because the oil is made up of many antioxidants, which fight both free radical and deep tissue damage.

  • Astringent

Sandalwood is extremely popular in men’s products because of its astrignent properties, making it a perfect addition to any post-shave oil or cream. It tightens the skin, which helps prevent large pores, ingrown hairs and blackheads.

  • Calming

Not only is sandalwood beneficial for mental clarity, it also helps to create a feeling of relaxation and peace. A 2006 study found that although sandalwood was relaxing when smelled or rubbed on the skin, it did not promote drowsiness like lavender. Instead, it promoted what researchers referred to as a harmonious feeling; a present, clear, but calm awareness.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Aroma: Sweet, deep, woody

Extracted through steam distillation of bark of the Cedar tree, cedarwood oil produces a grounding aroma that promotes feelings of vitality and wellness.

  • Anti-Fungal

Cedarwood's anti-fungal properties make it brilliant for sensitive, itchy red skin, and can even relieve symptoms of eczema.

  •  Increases Circulation

Cedarwood stimulates blood flow to the skin, giving you a healthy glow, increasing collagen production and helping its other moisturising factors absorb into the skin.

  • Anti-Ageing

Cedarwood oil firms and tightens the skin, helping tighten any fine lines and loose or sagging skin.

  • Antioxidant

Cedar trees are native to colder climates, where they often also survive at high altitudes. As a result, the tree has powerful healing properties, as it has to constantly shed and renew cells in order to survive. Using the oil is a great way to inject some of this powerful healing into your own skin, helping to fight free-radical damage.

  • Purifying

Cedarwood reduces oil production, making it a great balancing oil for greasier skin types. Reducing the amount of oil that the skin secretes will in turn lead to a reduction in acne, caused by excess oil. Cedarwood oil also minimise the appearance of pores, giving you a smoother, clearer and healthier complexion

But what are the benefits of using a facial oil?

Facial oils have fantastic moisturising and skin smoothing properties, thanks to their ability to penetrate deeper into the skin’s many layers than most creams. This deep hydration means that you can feel the benefits throughout the day!

The five oils in this new facial oil are all lipophilic (fat loving), so they absorb into the skin’s lipid barrier easily and do not sit on the surface of the skin. This means that even oily skin types can benefit from this particular non-greasy facial oil, which will help regulate the skin’s own oil production.
